Whenever I harp on about my love of treadmill training I always get people who say I'd be better off both financially and in terms of my fitness levels if I just ran outside. While this sounds perfectly reasonable on the surface, for many of us outdoor running is just not an option a lot of the time.

I live in a climate where outdoor running is all but impossible for 3 months of the year. With the constant cold wet weather going outside is not only unappealing but in the middle of winter can be downright dangerous.

Also, there are some places such as many large cities were running outside can be an unwise choice due to unfriendly neighborhoods and problems with air quality.

Apart from the problems that can occur when we want to run outside there are also advantages to choosing to use a treadmill which make it a useful item to have. There may be times when it is not possible to leave the house but you really want to get a workout in. Maybe you have to wait in for a delivery or you need to watch the children.

Another thing I like about the treadmill is that sometimes I know I really need to get a workout in to keep my running on track but I'll feel like taking the day off. On days like this I throw on my workout gear and get on the treadmill in front of the television. Distracted by the television I find it much easier to get into the workout always start to enjoy it once I get warmed up.

Having said all that I still believe that in an ideal world I would choose to run outdoors most of the time. I enjoy using a treadmill and would be lost without but you can't beat running along the beach in the fresh air when the sun is in the sky.
